The difference is obvious
Vehicle Posture Analysis - VPA
Nerang Physiotherapy is proud to announce our new unique test for individual postures in vehicles.
Whether you are a long-distance driver or someone who does daily short trips, you are susceptible to poor postures in the car. Fixed positions and poor use of muscles results in stiffness, weakness and pain. A simple adjustment in the seating position can make all the difference, but how would you know what that is?
Keep back pain at bay
Introducing the VPA - Vehicle Posture Analysis. In order to find out what the best seating posture is for YOU is vital to preventing pain and dysfunction in and out of your vehicle. Despite what car manufacturers say, car seats are not as well designed as they seem. Very much like sports shoes, car seats are made for comfort and support, yet this mere fact could cripple both your feet (shoes) and your back (car seats).
We are fortunate to have a body that is designed to be dynamic, to move freely in the space it has. If we restrict this space in any way, whether it be with tight clothing, tight shoes or 'supportive' car seats, we limit the freedom our bodies require to function well. Imaging yourself wrapped up in a tight bin bag with no room for maneuvering. Would you feel comfortable? Would you be happy in this small space or would you feel claustrophobic?
Your body doesn't lie
Well this is how your body feels when trapped in tight spaces and it is no different in car seats. These modern seats wrap you up, cuddle you and lock you in to a fixed posture from which it is difficult to free yourself. The sears slope from front to back wedging you onto the base of your spine, which could increase the pressure on your lower lumbar discs approximately 6 times more than if you were standing.
In this position the lumbar/pelvic area is locked making it more difficult for your body to function well between the upper and lower halves. This puts a lot of strain on your upper and middle back and legs. Together with this the position of the back-rest of the seat is often incorrect as is the position of the seat with regards closeness to the steering wheel.
With VPA all these aspects and more are analysed making your posture the perfect one for you. So how do we do this? Simple, we let your body tell us! Through the proven scientific technique of Applied Kinesiology feedback from your muscles will give us accurate information about your posture, allowing us to make the most subtle changes in order to maximise your posture to reduce strain on your body.
A driving posture suited to the individual
Applied Kinesiology involves the gentle testing of a muscle in the body, usually the deltoids of the shoulder, and the feedback is instant. It utilises the natural stress response our body has built-in, that is that all muscle tone drops for a very short period after stress is applied (you have heard of the term "going weak at the knees"). We use this drop in tone as an indication of stress and if your body is stressed by a particular posture, it will show immediately in your reflexes/tone of the muscle we are testing.
The results are quick and you can feel the difference immediately. By adjusting seat positions, arm positions and often the use of a seating wedge, you can assume the best driving posture for you. Let your body be the judge of how you should be sitting.
